Baker Mayfield was taken off waivers by the Rams after being released by the Carolina Panthers. The former first-round pick joins a Rams squad that is down to John Wolford and Bryce Perkins after Matthew Stafford suffered a neck injury and was placed on injured reserve
For the Panthers, Mayfield started six games and completed six touchdown passes and six interceptions. He had two interceptions in his final start against the Ravens in Week 11, which the Panthers defeated 13-3.
After being dealt by the Browns to Carolina in the offseason, he had a 1-5 record in his six starts there.
With a record of 3-9 after 12 games, the Rams aren’t in the running for a postseason spot in 2022, but they now have five more weeks to assess Mayfield with the hope of re-signing him in the offseason to serve as Stafford’s backup.
Mayfield won’t take up much room on the cap because the Rams assume $1.35 million of his contract by claiming him.
The Rams also avoided Mayfield joining the 49ers, who might have claimed him this week after losing Jimmy Garoppolo to a foot injury, as an added benefit.
