Dave Chapelle’s surprise appearance surprised everyone
At the weekend’s sold-out comedy concert at Madison Square Garden, controversial comedian Dave Chappelle made an unscheduled cameo to open.
Questlove, Maverick Carter, a well-known business partner of LeBron James, Rhuigi Villaseor, comedian Tony Rock, and others were also in attendance.
Naturally, Lenny S also caught the “historic” occasion. When Rock, Hart, and Dave Chappelle all shared the MSG stage with a natural goat.
After Rock and Hart had entertained the audience for an hour. Dave Chappelle returned to the stage next to them, surprising the NYC audience with a 20-minute opening act.
The sharing that Dave Chappelle expressed during the show
Chappelle spoke for a short while on the friendship that comics have.
“Tonight, being with these guys means the world to me,” he said. “They try to cancel people, but you have to understand something: I’ve been doing this for 35 years. Comedians, we go to their birthday parties, we go to their weddings. And we go to their baby’s fucking baby showers, we go to each other’s funerals.”
He added, “But my man, these men, and women that do stand-up comedy have a culture that would be very hard for you to understand. I’ve said it before, each and everyone one of you. No matter what you believe, have a champion in our room and we will never silence each other. And when my brothers call me, I come running.”
Dave Chappelle’s appearance at MSG comes days after his show at First Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota was canceled due to backlash from the LGBTQ+ community over his 2021 Netflix special The Closer. The venue apologized to their guests and moved the show to the Varsity Theater.
Dave Chappelle tackled a number of current events in The Closer. Including the uproar over DaBaby’s homophobic outburst at Rolling Loud Miami the previous year. And Caitlyn Jenner was named “Woman of the Year” by Glamour magazine.
