Keegan Thompson, Velazquez, and Morel power Cubs past Nationals

Keegan Thompson had another strong outing on Monday night, pitching six effective innings against the Washington Nationals. Thompson (9-5) didn’t walk a batter and only gave up five hits, with Luke Voit hitting a homer off him in the sixth to end his shutout bid. The Chicago Cubs went on to win the game 6-3, thanks in part to home runs from rookies Nelson Velázquez and Christopher Morel in the third inning. Thompson has been impressive lately, stringing together three solid starts in a row. With the Cubs currently sitting in first place in the NL Central, they’ll need Thompson to keep up his good form if they want to stay there.

Keegan Thompson has been a bright spot for the Cubs this season. The young pitcher has posted a 6-2 record and 2.40 ERA in eight starts at Wrigley Field. Cubs starting pitchers have been on a roll lately, posting a 2.87 ERA and nine quality starts in 19 games since July 16.

Thompson was in top form again today, pitching five shutout innings against the Nationals. He got into a bit of trouble in the sixth, giving up back-to-back singles to start the inning. However, he was able to work his way out of it and preserve the shutout.

The match became even more intense when the scores changed up and down

The Cubs offense finally got going in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to a three-run homer by Victor Caratini. Anibal Sanchez (0-5) pitched five-plus innings, the longest outing by a Nationals starter during their losing streak. But Sanchez was pulled after surrendering the homer to Caratini.

The wind was blowing hard and Sanchez was on fire, retiring the first six batters. Then Velazquez stepped up to the plate and homered to left, putting the first run on the board. After that, it was all downhill. Morel smacked a two-run shot into the left field bleachers, giving the other team a comfortable lead. Morel is nursing a tight right hamstring, but that didn’t stop him from making a great play. Despite the error, Rucker was able to come in and strike out Robles to end the threat.

The Cubs capitalized in the bottom of the inning as Willson Contreras hit an RBI single, and Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly.

That loomed larger as pinch-hitter Joey Meneses hit a two-run homer off Cubs left-handed reliever Brandon Hughes with two out in the eighth. Hughes had allowed one earned run in his 13 previous innings prior to Meneses’ homer.

Rowan Wick pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save in seven chances.

UP NEXT

The Nationals will send RHP Paolo Espino (0-4, 4.20) to the mound Tuesday night against the Cubs. Espino allowed five runs in four innings in a 5-4 loss Thursday to the Phillies. The Cubs will counter with RHP Marcus Stroman (3-5, 4.00), who allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings Thursday in a 4-3 loss to the Cardinals.
