Lil Wayne Reacts To The Death Of The Ex-cop Who Saved His Life

Lil Wayne is mourning the death of 65-year-old Robert Hoobler, the former New Orleans police officer who saved his life following a suicide attempt. On Friday, emergency personnel discovered Hoobler’s death at his Old Jefferson residence (July 22). He shared his sorrow with his 15.6 million Instagram followers as the news spread.

“Everything happens for a reason. I was dying when I met u at this very spot. U refused to let me die,” Wayne wrote via Instagram on Monday (July 25) beneath a photo of Hoobler. “Everything that doesn’t happen, doesn’t happen for a reason. That reason is you and faith. RIP Uncle Bob. Aunt Kathie has been waiting for u. I’ll love & miss u both and live for us all.”

Death

The New Orleans Advocate reported that Hoobler’s body was discovered in his Old Jefferson, Louisiana, residence. He was 65. Eventually, both of his legs had to be amputated due to diabetes and ongoing health problems from a car accident, according to his grandson Daniel Nelson. Former coworker David Lapene praised Lil Wayne’s account of how Hoobler saved his life over 30 years ago as “one of the best anecdotes that represent Hoobler as a person.”

Lil Wayne’s meeting with the ex-cop when he committed suicide

The rapper, now 39, sat down with author and former NFL player Emmanuel Acho last August to talk about his mental health issues and to be candid about his suicidal attempt at such a young age. Young Money MC (real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.) put his mother’s gun to his head on November 11, 1994, after first calling the police. Wayne recalled how the blood gushing out of his chest made it simple for him to slide his body across the floor after shooting himself in the chest and hearing the police banging on the front door. He then kicked the door to let the police know that someone was inside.

He claimed that when police came on the scene, several of them stepped over his bleeding body to look for narcotics and weapons instead. Hoobler arrived at the scene—he was actually off-duty at the time—and hurried Lil Wayne to the hospital.

“[He] picked me up and just kept telling me some shit like, ‘You not gonna die on me,’” he said. “And so he got me to the hospital … He made sure I was good”.
