Ron Rivera Apparently Had No Idea That The Commanders Could Have Been Eliminated By Week 17

It was reported that the Washington Commandos were defeated on Sunday evening however the possibility of it happening was unknown to the Commanders’ the head coach Ron Rivera.

After the team’s 24-10 loss against Cleveland Browns, Rivera was asked questions by the media. One reporter asked him regarding his quarterback’s strategy for next week, if the Commanders get knocked out on Sunday Rivera stopped for a few minutes before asking:

“We could be destroyed?”

He was truly shocked to learn that the Commanders would be taken out in a matter of hours.

Rivera attempted to clarify his remarks with ESPN’s Washington reporter John Keim, though it wasn’t much help. He claimed he was concerned about what could occur should Washington wins, and was not thinking about the other options.

A few an hour after, the Commanders were exiled from the playoffs following their lost to the Green Bay Packers beat their opponents the Minnesota Vikings 41-17 at Lambeau Field. It was just one part of a bigger sequence of events that had to occur in order to defeat Washington out, including the Commander’s defeat as well as that of the Chicago Bears’ defeat in the playoffs to the Detroit Lions

It’s not uncommon for an executive coach to have an uncontrollable brain flutter and be blank when asked the names of the team or player. This is commonplace and even the most efficient people. However, what happened to Rivera here isn’t the case. He did not forget one aspect of the elimination process as well as the names of any of the teams that were involved. He seemed to have no idea of how the Commanders would be eliminated on Sunday.

The role of the head coach’s job is to train their team for all situations in both the in and off the field. If Rivera had known that the Commanders were likely to be eliminated, could that influence the decision to go with the quarterback Carson Wentz who was a victim of three interceptions, with no touchdowns in the game against the Browns on Sunday? Did he think about the possibility of starting the Browns’ Taylor Heinicke or even could he have benched Wentz in place of Heinicke in the course of the game?

However, it’s not important what he might have done. The game is finished and is in the books and the fate of the Commanders is in their own hands.
