The Who are an English rock group that was formed in London in 1964. The group includes the singer and songwriter Roger Daltrey, bassist John Entwistle and drummer Keith Moon and guitarist Pete Townshend. The group is frequently regarded as among the top musicians in the 20th century, with greater than 100 million albums sold around the world.

The Who was formed in the form of the group The Detours that made a splash within the UK pop mod and art scene by smashing instruments at every performance. Their debut song “I Can’t Explain” immediately was a top 10 hit in the UK and was followed by the popularity of their series that included singles “My Generation”, “Substitute” and “Happy Jack”. The year 1967 saw them performed as part of their first Monterrey Pop Festival, released the top 10 hit single “I Can See for Miles” and began their first tour. They released their fourth album Tommy (1969) featuring the track “Pinball Wizard” was a massive success. The performances during Woodstock as well as The Isle of Wight Festival have established their status in the rock scene. The sequel to Tommy’s album, Lifehouse, was canceled and the whole album was featured as part of The Who’s Next album (1971) by The Who, including the well-known track “Won’t Get Fooled Again”. The band then put out Quadrophenia (1973) to pay tribute to the new wave of mods, and also produced the film Tommy in 1975. They gradually decreased the amount of time they performed and, by the year 1976, there were no live performances at all. Their next album , Who are You (1978) came out just prior to the death of Moon, the drummer. After securing drummer Kenney Jones to replace him, The Who released the film Quadrophenia as well as documentaries The Kids Are Alright. The group disbanded in 1983 when Townshend had lost interest in performing live. But they do get together often, like in their participation in the Live Aid event in 1985 as well as their 25th Anniversary tour of 1989, and the Quadrophenia tour in 1996 and 1997. They returned to the stage and toured the world in 1999 along with the drummer Zak Starkey. Entwistle died in 2002, and the idea to make a new album had to be canceled. Townshend as well as Daltrey released Endless Wire in 2006 with alternative performers Starkey, Pino Palladino, Jon Button, or Simon Townshend.

The most significant contributions of the Who to rock’s history were the Marshall sound’s exploitation using an electronic synthesizer and public transmission system, the open method of playing lead with drums and bass, as well as playing. They created the harmonies and soft chords of electric guitar and later, the genre of rock opera. They are frequently regarded as significant artists in the punk rock, hard rock mod and rock genres, and their songs are beloved today.
